While the benefits of green tea have been spoken about for years, the sudden appearance of matcha and matcha lattes has got us questioning whether there was a big difference between a cup of plain old green tea and its Instagram famous sister, matcha. Is matcha powder better for you than green tea?

1. Matcha for the caffeine benefit (yes, benefit!)

Did you know that tea contains a naturally occurring caffeine? It does! This can support weight loss and increase fat burning during aerobic exercise. However, unlike coffee, tea contains the amino acid, L-theanine, which offsets the jitters, creating a unique balance of calm and alertness.

Like black tea, oolong, white tea and other green teas, matcha comes from the same evergreen shrub, Camillia sinensis. The difference between the types of tead is they way they are grown, harvested and dried. Matcha is lightly steamed and dried, not oxidized like black tea. The less processing involved, the higher the antioxidant content. 

Antioxidants are a key factor in lessening the impact of stress, the cellular wear-and-tear that’s associated with both aging and disease. 

The antioxidants in green tea are flavonoids are called catechins, the most potent of which is epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG. Research suggests that EGCG may support weight loss and improve mood - Bonus!
